Winter Camping Symposium October 15 – 18

We went to the Winter Camping Symposium on the weekend of October 15th for the first trip in the hot tent! It was the perfect place to first break out the snowtrekker because we blended right into the sea of at least 100 other snowtrekker tents that were on the YMCA Camp Miller campus that weekend.

While at the symposium, we took a bunch of cool classes, barely scratching the surface of all the classes that were included during the weekend. I took a winter tree ID class and a quinzhee building class and helped out with the day long youth program where 20 young winter campers got to build their own wood burning or alcohol stoves. Alex attended the quinzhee class with me plus an ice chisel building class, “Snowshoeing 101”, how to fell a tree and backcountry axemanship.

This is me in my quinzhee last winter^. My goal this year is to build an awesome, super warm quinzhee in the boundary waters while Alex does axemanship outside at camp.

On top of all our cool classes, we made a delicious dal meal on the wood burning stove in the tent, sauna-ed 4 times, met a bunch of fun people and saw some keynote speakers.

We’re super excited for next year and to get more opportunities to get out in the tent!
